Following on from a needs analysis that JM&A conducted on behalf of MS Society, JM&A was involved in the second stage of the project (ongoing) involving materials production. As the research stage identified, communication methods and strategies for each of the language groups showed differences. These differences needed to be addressed but a coordinated approach to materials development was also required so that MSA could work to provide a suite of multilingual resources that was both accessible and easy to manage.

Considering the early stages of MSA’s multilingual information campaign and the limited amount of in-language information on offer at present, JM&A is establishing a multilingual MSA portal as the start of a living resource that can be rolled out over a number of years.

Within this portal will sit links to each of the target language groups. Relevant information, informed by the research stage, will then be developed and up-loaded to the site on its completion. Within the site will also be links to other relevant MS website information (eg: MS International Federation website).

We were commissioned in partnership with Cultural Perspectives, to conduct a national research project to evaluate existing diabetes information campaigns and identify a culturally competent strategy for the communication of diabetes messages.

Three community groups were identified as being priority groups: the Turkish, Vietnamese and Arabic speaking communities. Target groups were selected on the basis of diabetes prevalence within each community group.

The research informed the second stage of the project—the development of culturally appropriate communications materials for the Turkish, Vietnamese and Arabic speaking communities. These materials address some of the myths and misconceptions about living with diabetes.
