The Team

BA (Hons), Dip Ed, Monash University, MA (Hons 1) University of Melbourne

Judith Miralles has over 20 year experience in policy analysis, development and implementation, spanning the community sector, local and state governments.

A striking feature of Judith's approach has always been the sensitisation of the 'mainstream' to the need to be culturally inclusive. In her work at varied organisations such as the Women's Information and Referral Exchange (WIRE); the Dandenong Valley Regional Library Service; VicHealth; the Office of Training, and Tertiary Education and the Department of Premier and Cabinet (Victoria); Judith has been a strong change agent for culturally inclusive policies.

She brings this commitment to and expertise in 'opening up the mainstream' to all her consultancy work.

Recently, Judith's work has begun to focus on capacity building, working with people from culturally diverse backgrounds to address the causes of social exclusion.

Judith has a first class Masters in Applied Linguistics from the University of Melbourne and a Bachelor of Arts with Honours and Diploma in Education from Monash University. A fluent Spanish and Catalan speaker who also is conversant in French and Italian, Judith has worked as an interpreter and translator. In fact, Judith was involved in the development of quality assurance for language services in Australia.

An informative, sensitive and stimulating speaker, Judith is often asked to present keynote addresses at conferences both nationally and internationally. She puts what she preaches into practicea and her presentations strive to be devoid of the cultural and linguistic myopia that can alienate audiences. Conference paricipants in Cuba gave her a standing ovation for being the only presenter from an English speaking country to deliver her address in Spanish.

Judith has also kept close links with the community sector and is currently on the Board of the Immigrant Women's Domestic Violence Service.

BA, Monash University

Since graduating with an Arts degree, Beatriz has worked in the research industry where she has developed solid expertise in the management of national projects requiring extensive coordination as well as a sensitive liaison role. Her experience in the supervision of logistically complex national projects ensures that they are completed on time and meet all benchmarks.

Her recent work with Judith Miralles & Associates has involved projects for the Department of Human Services, the National Health and Medical Research Council, the Department of Education Science and Training, Diabetes Australia, Moreland City Council, the National Centre for Vocational Education Research and the Community Support Fund. Through working closely on these projects Beatriz has developed an understanding of the intricate culturally inclusive research processes and methodologies that Judith Miralles & Associates delivers in all its research and training projects.

Her very hands-on experience both in the area of field management and more recently, project development, has given her a solid and well rounded background and working knowledge of the industry and its social significance. Along with these very practical attributes, Beatriz also brings a creative and fresh approach to her work due to her background in Fine Art and Design. This is an invaluable skill she applies during the drafting and design of our reports and publications.

More recently, Beatriz’s work has begun to focus on capacity building, working with people from culturally diverse backgrounds and the organisations that support them, to address the causes of social exclusion. She has been the principal author of a report entitled Creating Learning Spaces for Refugees – The role of Community Based organisations in Australia. This was a peer reviewed national research project commissioned by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) to examine how multicultural community organisations help to increase the social capital of refugees and contribute to outcomes including employment and civic participation amongst refugee groups.

Beatriz also shares her expertise with the non-government sector and is currently on the multicultural committee of the MS Society.
